Rooting Google Pixel devices

Google Pixel is the most rooting-friendly phone you can buy — by design. Pixels are Google's developer reference devices, so unlocking is a supported workflow: enable OEM Unlocking in Developer Options and run a single fastboot command. Google publishes full factory and OTA images for every Pixel directly, which means recovering from almost any mistake is straightforward — you can always flash back to stock.

Rooting uses Magisk to patch the boot image; note that from the Pixel 7 series onward the target moved to init_boot.img rather than boot.img. The one consistent exception is carrier financing: Pixels bought on a Verizon plan (and some other carrier-financed units) can have the OEM Unlocking toggle permanently greyed out. Because Google's factory images and monthly updates are so accessible, Pixels are also the best platform for custom ROMs and for GrapheneOS, which uniquely re-locks the bootloader for a hardened, still-secure setup. Unlocking wipes the device, so back up first.
