Google Pixel 6 Overview

The Google Pixel 6 is an Android device from Google, released in 2021. It combines the Google Tensor (5 nm) and a 6.4-inch display, running Android 12. This page tracks its full specifications, root status, and the bootloader and recovery notes that apply to it.

Root the Google Pixel 6

The Google Pixel 6 is a 2021 Android device from Google. It runs the Google Tensor (5 nm), a Google Tensor platform with first-party factory images — the friendliest root target there is. Shipped software: Android 12, upgradable to Android 15, up to 5 major Android upgrades. For this model the realistic path is: the brand-specific unlock described below, followed by Magisk via patched boot image (fastboot). Typical hands-on time is 30–60 minutes.

Difficulty

Easy — well-supported device

Typical time

30–60 minutes

Method

Magisk via patched boot image (fastboot) — KernelSU also viable (GKI kernel)

Bootloader unlock on Google

Pixel bootloaders unlock with a single fastboot command once OEM Unlocking is enabled — no codes, no waiting periods. Carrier-financed US units (notably Verizon) can have the toggle permanently greyed out.

Platform notes

Google Tensor Pixels are the most rooting-friendly platform available: factory images are published directly by Google, flashing is plain fastboot, and recovery from mistakes is straightforward.

Before you start

  • Bootloader unlocking factory-resets the device on almost all models — back up everything first.

FAQ

Can I root the Google Pixel 6?

Yes. After enabling OEM Unlocking and unlocking the bootloader, root is Magisk via patched boot image (fastboot). The unlock notes on this page describe the exact Google procedure.

Does the Google Pixel 6 support custom recovery (TWRP)?

Recent Pixels have little TWRP support and do not need it: Google publishes full factory images, and root is installed by flashing a Magisk-patched boot image via fastboot.

Will root the Google Pixel 6 void my warranty?

Google will generally treat a rooted Google Pixel 6 as outside warranty while it is modified. Restoring full stock firmware before a service visit usually restores normal treatment in practice, and consumer law in some regions (such as the EU) may still cover defects unrelated to root.

What Android version does the Google Pixel 6 run?

It runs Android 12, upgradable to Android 15, up to 5 major Android upgrades. The specifications table on this page lists the full software details.
